Description

Description is based off of the IJN Amagi in the Destroyermen series by Taylor Anderson

The Amagi class battlecruiser was an Imperial Japanese Navy ship that served in World War 2 in the beginning months of the war. Ships of this class had an armament of 10 x 16 in L/45 guns, 16 x 5.5 in L/50 guns, 6 x 4.7 in L/45 AA guns, and 8 x 24 in torpedo tubes. Her armor was around 10 inches at the belt, 3.875 in on the deck, 3-14 inches for the Conning tower, and 9-11 in for the barbettes. She was 826 feet 1in for length and her beam was 101 feet. Her propulsion was by a 4-shaft Gihon turbines, and 19 Kampon Boilers that allowed the Amagi to reach a speed of 30 knots (35 mph).

The IJN Amagi is the class leader of these ships and is under the command of Captain Hisashi Kurokawa. She was the leading vessel in the Japanese battle group that attacked the Allied force that consisted of HMS Exeter, USS Pope, HMS Encounter, USS Mahan and USS Walker. The Amagi’s artillery cannons were too much for the small squadron and they forced the Allies to fall back. One by one Exeter, Pope, and Encounter were taken down by either Amagi or the battle group with her. The only ships left to oppose her were the severely damaged Mahan and Walker. Mahan performed a final charge unloading the last of her torpedoes into Amagi severely damaging her below water line hull and caused water breaches. Amagi was also in the Squall with Walker and Mahan when they were transported and was probably also brought through with them.
