Description

A stretch of land between West Egg and New York City. The land is desolate because industrial ashes are dumped there. Although the land may be desolate many live there due to their lack of wealth.

This "valley" symbolizes the moral and social decay present within the novel. This decay occurs because of the uninhibited pursuit of wealth. It also symbolizes the experience of the poor, forced to live among the ashes as a result of this pursuit of wealth.
