The Masks of Thalia and Melpomene

Title

The Masks of Thalia and Melpomene

Subject

Masks donned by the muse of comedy and the muse of tragedy.

Description

These masks are often used in modern times to symbolize theatre. They are associated with the two main types of drama: comedy and tragedy. Therefore, it is said that they were owned by Thalia and Melpomene, respectively. Thalia is the muse of comedy while Melpomene is the muse of tragedy. The presence of satire in a lot of art makes it darkly fitting that these two are so frequently associated with each other.
