Setting in Gatsby

light.jpg
The Green Light is a light that Gatsby sees from a distance, it is a light that is positioned at the end of Daisy's Dock. Daisy is Nick's cousin but also a woman that Gatsby is very fond of. The Green Light is part of the setting in this book, but has a bigger role as a symbol.

The Valley of Ashes. a stretch of land that lies between West Egg and New York City. It is introduced to the reader in Chapter  and is made up of the dumping of the industrial ashes. This is another place in the story but also part of a larger theme. This is also important to the setting because it was were Daisy struck and killed Myrtle. Nick, Jordan and Tom discover Myrtle on their drive home.

The Novel mentions New York City among others throughout this book. During the 1920s New York City is uninhibited, but beginning to shape itself into a destination for those who seek money and pleasure. All of which is what Gatsby seeks. New York City during this time was a center of manufacturing, commerce, and culture. Immigrants coming from land and sea helped feed the city's up and coming economy.

The Queensboro Bridge connects Long Island and Manhattan in New York City. The Bridge, sometimes referred to as the 59th Street Bridge, was used by Gatsby and Nick among others to get to their jobs in the city. It was the gateway for the characters and also serves that same purpose for people since it opened in 1908

These are some of the key settings in the story "The Great Gatsby".

Listed are the place where things that are important to the plot of the story happen. Some are not only about the place, but about a much larger entity that deals with theme.

The different places that are envisioned by the reader throughout the novel are similar to the suburbs and social classes that we see today. Except today is much more modernized and conisits of a lot more people and a lot more money.

However, the settings portayed throughout the novel seem to be accurate as to how life in New York City was in the 1920s.
